Writing

I am an experienced journalist who has completed work for media companies across Canada and the United States. I know how to dig for information, how to handle a tough interview, how to write quickly and cleanly, and how to work collaboratively with editors. I’m also experienced in other forms of writing. I can easily handle press releases, essays, research papers, and even the odd humour piece.

Editing

I have been an editor for over seven years. I’m well versed in CP style, and understand what makes a compelling story. I’m experienced at coaching young writers and collaborating to make sure content is the best it can be.

Research

In 2012, I graduated law school. In the end, I decided not to become a lawyer — but I retained all those legal research skills. I understand where and how to look for information, and can synthesize it so that it is easy to understand.

Teaching and Lecturing

I love public speaking. For about two years, I taught a variety of journalism courses at Humber College in Toronto, and I’m currently an instructor at the Ryerson School of Journalism. I have also given presentations or moderated talks at: the Canadian Association of Journalists annual conference, Massey College, University of Toronto Mississauga, the Canadian University Press conference, and ONA Toronto pub nights. I can easily prepare and give presentations on a number of topics, including pitching stories, investigative reporting and media literacy.

Social Media

I am extremely online — there is no known cure. But thanks to that, I have a great understanding about how to craft compelling social media campaigns. I have experience writing daily and weekly newsletters; creating posts for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram; and analyzing analytic data.

Consulting

For years, I wrote about best practices in journalism. I applied those skills in my own work, and as a member of the advisory committee for the West End Phoenix, and as a board member for Wilfrid Laurier University Student Publications. I can help you identify your organization’s strengths and weaknesses and create a plan that will help you achieve your goals.
